Requirements
Development of safety or mission critical software, hardware and test systems begins with clearly defined, testable requirements. A survey of medical device manufacturers found that 63% of software defects could be traced to requirements engineering (Denhardt 2007)
RTCA DO-178B requires traceability from system requirements through high-level requirements, high-level requirements to low-level requirements and low-level requirements to source code. Similarly, the FDA Software Guidance states that “it is not possible to validate software without predetermined and documented software requirements”.
